Mac vs. Windows will be shutting down

I am in the process of shutting down Mac vs. Windows permanently including both the wiki and the forums.

The decision wasn't an easy one. I have a lot of fond memories running this website and the interesting discussions these forums have seen over the years.

But I have realized that between my family and my demanding job, I just don't have the time nor the energy to devote to this website. Personally, I have not been happy with the results of the website since it switched to a "wiki" model. I think the website was more successful when the content was created by specific authors and the forums was used as feedback and discussion.

Now I am left with two decisions...

1. Close Mac vs. Windows permanently and sell off the domain.
2. Pass the torch to someone else who would like to take a shot at making this website a success, again.

Personally, I would like to go with option #2 as I would like to give someone else the chance to breathe life into this website. In order for it to be successful, it deserves someone who is more devoted.

If anyone here would like to take over, please contact me and let me know. We can begin the transition process. Otherwise, in several months, I will be closing the doors on the wiki and the forums for good.

The Official Mac vs. Windows Wiki Request List Launches Today!

Today, I posted our official Mac vs. Windows wiki request list on our discussion board. The idea is to identify the content that is currently missing from our comparisons on the wiki and share it with our team of fantastic contributors.

Many of our visitors sign up as contributors, but don't exactly know where to start. We believe this solution will help give them the head start they need. It also benefits our existing contributors by pinpointing what comparisons require attention at the moment.

Win-Win!

If you're one of our Mac vs. Windows contributors, I would encourage you to review this request list before working on anything else. We consider the items on this request list to be a priority above anything else.

Thanks.

The Return of iLife...

There has been much discussion regarding our strict policy to exclude Apple's iLife applications from our comparisons. We have received numerous e-mails from our visitors voicing their unhappiness with this policy.

A little background first...

In the beginning, we did include iLife in our X vs. XP comparisons. At the time, Apple was bundling all its iLife applications with Mac OS X. . This changed with Mac OS X Tiger. Apple removed all iLife applications leaving the only ways to obtain iLife was either purchasing it directly or buying a new Mac with it installed.

Our comparisons have always lived by a strict policy. Do not discuss any Apple or Microsoft software that isn't part of their operating system or can't be downloaded for free from their website. Since iLife no longer met this policy, we had to remove all traces of it from our comparisons. We were trying to be fair.

However, our readers didn't agree so much. Our Mac audience felt that iLife is a major feature of the Mac platform and by not mentioning it, we are not showing readers the "complete Mac experience". They also argued that iLife comes free on all new Macs. And since you can only purchase Macs from Apple, it can be pretty much guaranteed that every Mac user who can run Mac OS X Leopard has a Mac that came installed with some version of iLife.

After much thought, we realized that even though we were trying to be fair, we were ignoring our readers. So we decided to give them what they want.

That's right! iLife will now be discussed on Mac vs. Windows.

However, there are two BIG conditions that go along with this decision:

1. Any full-version Microsoft software package (no demos) that come installed on the majority of Windows PC's will also be included. The final decision on which Microsoft software include will be up to the owners of this wiki: Michael Moriarty and James Scariati.

2. Discussion of iLife or bundled Microsoft software will be out of scope in our scoring.

This lets us remain fair and at the same time give our readers what they want. So look forward to seeing more coverage of iLife and other Microsoft software on Mac vs. Windows soon.

From Stripes to Spots

Mac OS X Leopard went on sale this past Friday. This means that Tiger is no longer Apple's current operating system. Likewise, we should begin phasing it out of our Mac vs. Windows comparisons. Going forward, Mac OS X content (this includes screenshots as well) submitted on the wiki should be for Leopard and not Tiger.

For those that already do have Leopard, I would ask that you focus your attention on updating the existing comparisons that are currently written for Mac OS X Tiger. This includes:

Legacy Software Support
GUI Customization
Email
Web Browsing
Instant Messaging
Media Playback
Media Library Management
Media Center
Digital Photos
Calendar and Event Management

Thanks.
