I wold agree with you in most cases the concept of "multi-tasking" is lost on many individuals because on mobile devices it's a lot different and there's only so much you could do. But here's some examples of where I think allowing SOME form of multi-tasking would help.
1. Listen to online music streaming apps (like Pandora or Sirius XM) while browsing in Safari or while you are driving with your turn by turn GPS app running. 2. Apps like Google's Latitude (which was denied by the app store) could run in the background reporting the user's status. 3. Not having to completely exit a game to check your email. The game could just pause and then resume once you switch back. Having to reload the app again sucks. But here's how Apple could have taken things further with multi-tasking. Instead of implementing their iphone apps the way they do now on the ipad, they could have just left them at their original size and created a special view that allows multiple iphone apps to appear on screen at once in a coverflow style where you could just swipe thru them really quick. There would even be controls below them letting the user take a particular app full screen as for games. iPad apps would still go full screen but iPhone apps would be treated like widgets almost are on Mac OS X. I think Apple is displaying iPhone apps the way they are to encourage rapid iPad development. But they really should have made the transition smoother because it looks really inferior and dare I say...un-Apple like. I am sorry. But it just feels like many of the iPad's ideas are half baked at this time. I wonder if Apple felt they "had" to get this out the door. There are many missing touches. Besides what I mentioned... 1. Why are only books being offered through the iBook store? Why not magazines and what not? 2. They created a new iPod "itunes-lite" app for managing your device's music, but why not a iphoto-lite app for touching up photos that you import (they did create an accessory), tagging them, and managing albums, etc.? 3. There's no microphone app I could care less about the look of the device as I expected a large iPod touch. But I think they could have taken it farther on the software front. |

QUOTE But I think they could have taken it farther on the software front. I think they will. I think the iPad just doesn't seem as impressive as it really is because we're all used to the iPhone, and it's largely similar. Imagine if the iPad had come out in 2007 instead of the iPhone - we'd all be blown away. But the potential for the iPad is huge. |
